First blog!

Hello and welcome to my blog about my forthcoming journey to eLearn’s Professional Penetration Testing certification. Before I start, I would like to tell you a little about myself, what certifications I already have and why I have chosen to do eCPPT course over its rival certifications.

About myself!

My name is Rehan. This is the first time I am blogging, I have no previous experience so bare with me and hopefully as my content increases, my writing style will improve – fingers crossed! I am 28 years old, married and expecting a child in June 2020 (exciting times!). We live on the outskirts of Birmingham in England. Some of my hobbies include football, cricket, swimming (any sport really) and gym. Basically I am just an average guy looking to break in to the cyber security industry!

What do I do?

I am currently contracting for one of the big four banks of UK. My current job does not have anything to do with cyber security, not even the slightest! I commute on average 4 hours a day (I HATE this) and these days after work I dedicate 2/3 hours towards studying cyber security. The goal is to become a pentester and get a cybersec related job in 2020.

From the beginning!

My journey geared towards cyber security started roughly 2 years ago when I met one of my friend from college. We got talking about what we do and he mentioned he is a SOC analyst. Intrigued by this, I started researching in to cyber security. Cyber security really caught my attention and before I knew it, I was looking into what path I could take to also make a career in this field. As I had zero knowledge I started with the basics and studied my way to CompTIA A+. After completing A+ I went on to study Network+ and Security+. In November 2019 I managed to get my CEHv10 certificate. Currently I am also learning python scripting (you can check out my github page for tools that I have made using python – By completing these 4 certificates I realised that I now posses the theoretical knowledge however I lack practical experience…

What now?

I started researching on what to do next. Majority of the people advised OSCP but I watched a YouTube video by the cyber mentor (great content – check him out), he mentioned eCPPT (both are practical/hands on exam style). According to him its a tough decision between OSCP and eCPPT, he advised to do both. OSCP to filter your CV through HR and eCPPT to learn the right way to become a pentester. I then used my LinkedIn network to get other people’s opinion, again there was a lot of good point for both OSCP and eCPPT but from all this I realised that not a lot of people know about eCPPT…

I have decided to go ahead with eCPPT and once completed then turn my attention to OSCP. Why eCPPT? Well because I want to learn the right way. I want to learn the best techniques and tools and not having to google everything. I want to be able to hit the ground running when I finally get a job in cybersec. According to people who have done the course, eCPPT will prepare you for that. Don’t take me wrong, I have spent some time on Hack the Box and Vulhub too however I find it very overwhelming and I end up just following a write up and not having a clue about what I am doing. Therefore, I am willing to consider eCPPT as a stepping stone for OSCP. My aim is to learn from eCPPT and then use my newly learned skills on Hack the Box and vulnhub to polish them further and then attempt OSCP!

Why blog?

The reason why I am blogging is for others around me who are also looking to pursue a career in cybersec/pentesting. When I decided to do eCPPT I got thinking.. I know that I am not the only one who is looking to break in to this field, there must be lots of other people too and unfortunately there is not a lot of information on eCPPT like there is on OSCP. So you can consider it a blog to even the playing field. The aim is to help people make up their mind in what certification they should go for. The plan is to update my blog weekly. I will be writing about what I have learned in the week, what my personal opinion about the course is as it goes along and hopefully in the end a full review too!

Hopefully you will find my blogs useful in helping you decide if eCPPT is for you or not. If you have any questions or feedback on my content then please do tell me. I would love to hear from you!
